Why Shetland Cattle?

Our Shetland cattle are much more than livestock – they're an important part of how we care for the land.

This beautiful native Scottish breed has been shaped by centuries of life in harsh northern conditions. Thought to be descended from cattle kept by the Vikings and native island breeds, Shetland cattle are now considered a rare breed, making every herd an important part of helping to protect their future.

Perfectly suited to our agroecological approach, they're small, hardy and easy to handle. They happily live outdoors throughout the winter and thrive in our regenerative grazing system, where they are moved through small paddocks to improve soil health, encourage biodiversity and make the most of the pasture.

Shetland cattle are also wonderfully versatile. They produce delicious, high-quality beef and rich, creamy milk with a high butterfat content. Traditionally, many Shetland crofters kept a single "house cow" to provide milk, butter and cream for the family.

And, if we're honest, they're simply lovely to look at! With their gentle nature and striking coats—ranging from solid colours to beautifully patchy patterns—they're full of character and a joy to have on the farm.
